Step back in time with Dr Marie Dickie OBE from The Friends of Northampton Castle at The George Row Business Club!

Did you know Northampton has one of the most famous Norman castles in England?  It was built under the stewardship of the first Earl of Northampton, Simon de Senlis in 1084.  The castle had extensive grounds including a large keep, three deep trenches and gates which were surrounded by bulwarks made of earth and used to mount artillery.  In 1879 a loop line via Northampton was constructed resulting in the castle and its foundations to be demolished for the construction of the Castle Station.  The only remains that survived were some earth banks beside St Andrews Road and the re-positioned postern gate embedded into the station wall which can be seen in the entrance of the station.

Castle

With so much history behind it, such as in 1164, Thomas Becket was tried at the castle The Friends of Northampton Castle was established to publicise the castle and to provide information about the history and the castle itself.  On Thursday 23rd May Dr Marie Dickie OBE from The Friends of Northampton Castle will be joining us at the club to give us a brief history of the castle and tell us about the opportunities which are now there for the heritage to be celebrated.  Marie will also be talking about the latest archaeological dig which is taking place at the station as part of the re-development of the station which has uncovered much more than they expected!  Like us, they feel it is so important to preserve our history in conjunction of the new station developments.

Whether you love history, want to find out more about the town you live in or want to meet and connect with other local people and businesses this event is for you!
